Also known as Burning Bush, and Mexican Fireweed, this annual comes from Europe and Asia and belongs to the buckwheat clan. It flourishes in varied environments like floodplains, riparian areas, and prairies, particularly in western North America. Typically standing at 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 cm) tall and wide, it can reach up to 7 to 8 feet (2 to 2.5 meters). Its feathery bright green leaves turn fiery red in fall, giving it an attractive upright columnar shape reminiscent of cypress trees, hence the name. Its small flowers are forgettable, but its erect stems often form a candelabra formation, and over time, they may snap off to create tumbleweeds, scattering seeds across the land. Thriving in full sun with moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, it displays impressive drought and salt resistance and can fend off herbicides. This adaptable plant naturalizes easily, particularly in zones 8-10, and self-seeds readily, making container planting a useful strategy to control its spread in the landscape.
