The sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus), known for its vivid hues and alluring scent, is a popular choice in casual cottage gardens. Native to the Mediterranean, these plants thrive in damp, fertile soil with a slightly alkaline pH, sometimes benefiting from supplements like bone or blood meal during growth to boost flower production. Typically grown on trellises or fences, or even hanging from containers, they bring a playful, vertical element to any garden.
While its name may suggest otherwise, sweet peas are not edible and can be potentially harmful to humans (adults and children) and animals. With open pollination and spring flowers, they can be planted in autumn in warmer areas to produce blooms in winter, adding to their seasonal charm.

Sow three seeds together about a foot between groups of seeds. Plant sweet pea seeds about 1 inch down in the soil. Work compost into the soil about six weeks before planting the seeds for better blooms. Compost will also improve poor soil.
-
To optimize growth, avoid planting near onions, garlic, or potatoes. These crops may compete for nutrients and space or emit substances hindering development.
-
Sweet peas prefer rich but well-drained soil. A slightly alkaline soil pH (about 7.5) is ideal. They benefit from bone or blood meal supplements during the growing season
-
Do not eat. This plant and its seeds contain compounds that are toxic to children, adults, and animals. For ornamental use only.
